miniMEMNON, Part 01 - It's about trust

He makes a living from it.

I made miniMEMNONS and Mr Mohammed has already sold one of them, at 7 a.m. on January 1st. A symbolic act! A good omen. He's delighted: “It was my idea!”. He wants me to make a few bigger ones. And from a different material, please. 

All sorts. After all, I modeled the figurines, scoured the souk for plaster and silicone, made the series by hand. With my time and my money. But I know that Mr Mohammed is a poor man and that Egyptian pounds are worth nothing in euros. 

So what other valuable coin do I want to be paid with in a place where people lie and cheat like crazy? With trust. Trust! I tell him this: Mister Mohammed, I want you to trust me so I can trust you.

Das ist Mr. Mohammed. Er hat einen Basar in der Nähe der Memnon-Kolosse in Luxor und steht um fünf Uhr morgens auf, um Nofretete-Büsten, Glücksskarabäen und heilige Katzen für 250 LE, umgerechnet 5 Euro, an die Tagestouristen zu verkaufen.

Er lebt davon.

Ich habe miniMEMNONS gemacht und Mister Mohammed hat schon einen davon verkauft, am 1.1. um 7 Uhr früh. Eine symbolische Tat! Ein gutes Omen. Er freut sich: „Es war meine Idee!“. Ich soll noch ein paar größere machen. Und aus einem anderen Material bitte.

Allerhand. Immerhin habe ich die Figürchen modelliert, den Souk nach Gips und Silikon abgegrast, die Serie von Hand gefertigt. Von meiner Zeit und meinem Geld. Doch Mister Mohammed ist ein armer Mann und ägyptische Pfund in Euro nichts wert, das ist mir klar.

Mit welcher wertvollen Münze möchte ich also bezahlt werden an einem Ort, an dem gelogen und betrogen wird, dass sich die Balken biegen? Mit Vertrauen. Trust! Ich sage ihm dies: Mister Mohammed, I want you to trust me so I can trust you.
